Wisdom teeth are the last teeth that grow in the jaw. Often, there is not enough room to accommodate all the wisdom teeth in the mouth. They are typically not needed for proper function. They are often difficult and sometimes impossible to brush and floss, depending on their position. Our dentists will often recommended that these teeth be removed, especially early on in life. This is because waiting until you are older commonly results in more complications.
Some problems that wisdom teeth cause:
- Infection caused by an opening in the gum tissue. Bacteria can enter and result in hospitalization and serious complications.
- Damage or crowding of adjacent teeth
- A fluid-filled sac or tumor forming around the wisdom tooth. This can damage adjacent teeth and bone.
- Periodontal disease and bone loss in adjacent teeth. This is often because it is difficult to clean wisdom teeth.
